Rencontres explores the themes of displacement, identity, and the experience of voluntary exile.
Based in Paris since 2016, after having lived in several countries, Katalin Száraz Davies explores the intimate transformations that accompany life abroad, as well as the psychological dimensions of migration. Over the years, she has created a series of portraits of women living in Paris far from their countries of origin.
Created on film in the participants' own living spaces, these photographs emerge from encounters and conversations about their personal journeys, their sense of belonging, and the connections they forge in a city often shaped by mobility and transience.
An essential participatory dimension complements this photographic approach: following each portrait session, the participants are invited to handwrite their reflections, experiences, and emotions related to life abroad. Displayed alongside the portraits, these testimonies extend the photographic gaze, offering a direct, intimate, and deeply personal voice.
By bringing together image and writing, Rencontres creates a dual portrait: one shaped through the photographer's gaze, the other through each woman's own words. The exhibition brings together individual stories whose shared resonance invites reflection on the notions of home, identity, and community. It also highlights photography's ability to become a space for dialogue, trust, and shared experience.
